Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
What is integrative counseling, and how is it different from regular therapy?
Integrative counseling draws from multiple evidence-based therapeutic approaches — rather than applying a one-size-fits-all method, your therapist tailors the work to you. At Rooted, we look at the whole person: your mind, body, history, and relationships. This means your treatment might weave together approaches like cognitive-behavioral therapy, somatic work, mindfulness, or attachment-based therapy depending on what your unique healing journey calls for.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, disconnected, or simply know that something needs to shift — therapy can help. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from counseling. Many people come to therapy during life transitions, relationship challenges, or simply when they’re ready to understand themselves more deeply. If you’ve been wondering whether therapy is right for you, that wondering is often reason enough to reach out.
How do I get started?
The first step is scheduling a free consultation call. This gives us a chance to hear a little about what’s bringing you in, answer your questions, and see if we feel like a good fit. From there, we’ll schedule your first full session and get you set up with any intake paperwork.
Sessions & Process
What happens in the first session?
Your first session is a chance for us to get to know you. We’ll talk about what’s bringing you in, your history, your goals, and what you hope to get out of therapy. It’s also a time for you to get a feel for how we work and ask any questions you have. There’s no pressure to share everything at once — we go at your pace.
How long are sessions?
Individual sessions are typically 50 minutes. Couples sessions are generally 60–75 minutes. If you feel you need a longer session at any point, just talk with your therapist and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
How often will I need to come?
Most clients begin with weekly sessions, especially in the early stages of therapy. Consistency is one of the biggest factors in making progress. As you grow and your goals shift, sessions may move to every other week or as needed. You and your therapist will check in regularly about what frequency makes sense for you.
How long will I be in therapy?
This varies widely from person to person. Some people find meaningful relief in 8–12 sessions focused on a specific issue. Others benefit from longer-term work as they explore deeper patterns and continue to grow. There’s no set timeline — we work together, check in on your progress, and adjust as needed. You are always in the driver’s seat.
What will we actually talk about?
Whatever matters to you. Common topics include anxiety, depression, relationship patterns, grief, trauma, life transitions, self-worth, family dynamics, and personal growth. You don’t need to come in with a prepared agenda — your therapist will help guide the conversation.
Confidentiality & Privacy
Is what I share kept private?
Yes. Everything you share in therapy is strictly confidential. We follow all HIPAA privacy guidelines and use secure, encrypted systems to protect your information. There are a small number of legal exceptions — for example, if there is a risk of harm to yourself or someone else, or if child or elder abuse is disclosed — and your therapist will review these with you in your first session.
Will my therapist share information with my doctor or other providers?
Only with your written permission. If collaboration with your healthcare team would support your treatment, we’re happy to coordinate — but nothing is shared without your knowledge and consent.
Fees & Insurance
Do you accept insurance?
Yes. Please reach out to confirm current insurance and payment options, as these can change. We encourage you to contact us directly so we can walk you through what’s available and help you understand your options.
What if I can't afford the full session fee?
We believe therapy should be accessible. We offer a limited number of sliding scale spots for clients who need financial flexibility. Please don’t hesitate to bring this up when you reach out — we will always do our best to find a path forward.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
Yes. Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) can typically be used to pay for therapy sessions. Check with your plan provider to confirm the specifics of your coverage.
Logistics
Do you offer in-person and virtual sessions?
Yes. We offer both in-person and secure telehealth sessions. Virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person for most concerns and offers the flexibility to meet from wherever you feel most comfortable.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
We ask for at least 24–48 hours notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Late cancellations or no-shows may be subject to a fee. Life happens — just communicate with your therapist as early as possible and we’ll work with you.
Can my therapist prescribe medication?
No. Therapists are not licensed to prescribe medication. However, if we feel medication might be a helpful part of your care, we can refer you to a trusted psychiatrist or your primary care provider and, with your permission, collaborate with them to support your overall wellbeing.
A Question We Hear Often
I've never done therapy before. Is it going to be uncomfortable?
It can be — and that’s okay. Doing real inner work takes courage, and some sessions will feel harder than others. But Rooted is designed to be a space where you feel safe, seen, and never judged. We go at your pace. Most people find that even the uncomfortable sessions are where the most meaningful growth happens.
